Heads up!!

HB 4644, the multiple use permit legislation, is scheduled for Senate Transportation Committee debate on Thursday, October 5, 8:30 A.M. While at the Logging Expo I was contacted by staff to sponsor Rep. Triston Cole. Denise also informed me that Rep. Cole will ask Senator Casperson to bring SB 396 up for a second hearing on that day……

The Senate Transportation Committee will be held in the new Senate Office Building, the “Binsfeld Bldg.” named to honor former Lt. Governor and State Senator Binsfeld, corner Townsend St./Allegan St. While senator, Binsfeld sponsored legislation for MAT titled the “Critical Roads Fund”. The package created the category “E” Economic Development Funds. MAT put forth this effort to assist road commissions with road construction and repair with the end results being assistance to log haulers/forestry. CRAM and Michigan State Farm were supportive of our efforts. I think that overtime CRA has forgotten who created, developed and moved the idea forward giving them a funding stream to assist with critical road construction and repair–just saying.

I will remind “all” of the upcoming meeting as we get closer to the hearing–just wanted you to get this on your calendar. I am hoping we can duplicate our House Transportation Committee presentation in the Senate. As usual, I will canvas the Senate committee for votes before the meeting and attempt to answer questions ahead of the committee meeting. Mike Sturgill has agreed to testify and I am hoping that Mike Elenz and David TerBeck, AIS will be available to do the same as before. Lonnie also attended the meeting and submitted a card of support. I am confident Henry Schienbeck and Jessie Augustyn will testify on behalf of GLTPA.
